Students in the department are eligible to become members of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA). NSSLHA is a national pre-professional organization for undergraduate and graduate students interested in the study of human communication and related disabilities.
Students may join at the national or local level. The U of I has an active local chapter which meets regularly throughout the year and has been recognized by the University for its contributions to the quality of student life. NSSLHA not only serves as an important link for students to their future profession and opportunities, it also provides them with a sense of connectedness to their department, to the faculty, and to one another. La Organizacion de Logopedia y
Audiologia (OLA)
is an organization comprised of students interested in
being bilingual speech pathologists or audiologists. This group meets about twice a month and provides
opportunities to volunteer, to learn Spanish terminology related to speech pathology and audiology, and
to hear speakers on related subjects.
The AHS Council is college-wide organization comprised of students from all three departments in the
College of Applied Health Sciences–Kinesiology and Community Health; Recreation, Sport and Tourism; and
Speech and Hearing Science. The AHS
Student Council
provides opportunities to meet students from other departments in the college through social, volunteer,
and college events.
