Undergraduate Programs

Undergraduate Program Overview

The Department of Speech and Hearing Science offers undergraduates a choice of career paths culminating in a Bachelor of Science degree and prepares them for careers and graduate education. The program has three concentrations: Speech-Language Pathology, Audiology, and Human Communication Science, where students may also combine their interests in communication with preparation for careers in other fields such as dentistry, physical or occupational therapy, physiology, linguistics, or law. The Human Communication Science concentration also includes an American Sign Language (ASL) track. For an overview of the program and career opportunities, download the brochure.

A concentration must be declared prior to the senior year. Students are advised to consult Undergraduate Advising and their academic advisor on a regular basis to ensure they are meeting all requirements.

Speech-Language Pathology

Speech-language pathologists diagnose and treat individuals of all ages with speech, language, and swallowing disorders. A master’s degree and clinical certification are required by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association to become certified as a speech-language pathologist.

Requirements list effective for students entering program Fall 2010 on.

Audiology

Audiologists work to prevent, diagnosis, and treat hearing disorders in hearing-impaired people of all ages. The Doctor of Audiology (AuD) degree is required for those pursuing a career as an audiologist.

Requirements list effective for students entering program Fall 2010 on.

Human Communication Sciences

This area of concentration offers students a broad-based communications degree that allows them to pursue an area of interest in speech, language and hearing science or to pair an interest in communication disorders with other areas outside the department. Students interested in pursuing this option are advised to work in close consultation with an SHS faculty member and the SHS undergraduate academic advisor.

Requirements list effective for students entering program Fall 2010 on.
