- Professor Hengst teaches courses in adult-onset cognitive-linguistic communication disorders, augmentative and alternative communication, and normal processes of language-use and development across the lifespan.

- Situated studies of discourse practices, especially focusing on individuals with aphasia and their routine communication partners.
